This is the Electric Power Steering (EPS/MDPS) motor & controller mounted on the steering column. It provides steering assistance by applying motor torque to the column based on sensor input (torque/angle signals) and vehicle speed. Simple steering system diagram (for clarity). On RHD (UK) cars this assembly sits under the dashboard near the driver's knees, on the steering column.
UK Nearside / Offside guide (RHD): Nearside = left (kerb side). Offside = right (driver side). Highlight shows the typical steering column/EPS area. Some vehicles may need EPS/steering angle calibration, fault-code clearing, or configuration after replacement. If you are not comfortable with this, we recommend professional installation.
Common symptoms of a failing EPS column. Heavy steering / no assistance (especially at low speed). EPS warning light on the dash.Intermittent steering assist (works then cuts out). Steering feels notchy, uneven, or noisy from the column area. Fault codes stored for EPS/torque sensor/motor. Safety first: steering & airbag systems are safety-critical.
Socket set & ratchet (plus extensions). Torx bits / screwdrivers (trim panels). Marker pen for alignment marks.
Diagnostic tool (recommended) for EPS reset/calibration. Disconnect battery, wait, then remove lower dash/column trims. Mark steering/shaft alignment before separation. Disconnect electrical plugs from the EPS unit/module.Undo column mounting bolts and the lower universal joint bolt. Remove the steering column assembly carefully. Reconnect wiring, refit trims, reconnect battery. Clear faults / perform steering angle & EPS calibration if required.
